What is Aikido?

The word “Aikido” is made up of three ideograms: “Ai” which means harmony or union; “Ki” which means essence, spirit, or energy; and “Do” which means way or path. It is often translated as The Way to be in harmony with the energy of the universe.

o'sensei - aikido founder
Morihei Ueshiba – The Founder of Aikido

Aikido was developed in Japan by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969). Ueshiba is referred to as “O’Sensei,” meaning “Great Teacher.” O’Sensei formed aikido based upon the techniques of the ancient Japanese martial art of Daito-ryu Aiki Jujutsu and various other fighting arts he studied. It was the blending of O’Sensei’s legendary skill at fighting arts and his deep spiritual and religious convictions that made aikido the unique martial art it is today. O’Sensei rejected all techniques that met force against force and created an art that aspires to always meet aggression with compassion. The energy of the aggressor is redirected to avoid harm to the defender, the attacker is neutralized with minimal force, and the situation ends with no physical harm done to either person. Many foreigners heard about this mysterious martial arts master and moved to Japan to train under O’Sensei and many of his Japanese students travelled throughout the world spreading the nonviolent fighting techniques he called aikido. O’Sensei’s teachings were so appealing to a modern society that it spread rapidly and is now practiced all around the world. Students are taught to take these principles outside the context of a physical fight and use the strategies of conflict resolution on a daily basis to bring peace to their daily lives. The dream of O’Sensei was that aikido principles would someday help bring peaceful resolution to all conflict throughout the world.

Who Can Practice?

Because it applies no brute-force techniques, Aikido is highly suitable for men and women of all shapes and sizes. Our program accepts students ages 13 to adult. Due to the cooperative nature of the art, people of widely varying physical capabilities can practice and learn together. Absolute beginners should not be intimidated by being in a class surrounded by black belts. Students learn much faster, and more safely, when practicing with highly skilled partners.

What to Expect

Sensei Chuck Hauk teaching beginning aikido students

As a beginning student you will be led step-by-step through simple falling exercises called ukemi. Learning the techniques of ukemi will allow you to fall safely when thrown off-balance by your training partner. You will also be introduced to the basic movements that make Aikido unique. You will begin with simple skills, then progressively more sophisticated techniques which are designed to neutralize an opponent’s attack. Everyone is encouraged to go at their own pace and take care of their health. Like all forms of exercise, the secret to sticking with it is to ease into practice slowly. That way your body can adapt to the new demands you are putting on it. Over time you will get in better shape and the practice will not stress your body. Don’t pressure yourself to push hard at the beginning and the learning process will be much safer – and far more enjoyable!

The Power of Harmony

Advanced aikido black belts training

As applied nonresistance, aikido becomes incredibly powerful. The strength of the attack is returned to the attacker without hindrance. Thus, the attacker is defeated by his or her own attempt to harm another. Properly executed, the art is pure self-defense. Although it is related to other traditional Japanese martial arts, there is one fundamental difference. Unlike the older combative arts from which it originated, its source, ideally, lies in the loving protection of all things.

Aikido ideally involves a complete integration of principles into daily life. To practice only on the mat is incomplete. The inner strength and beauty of the art is a direct result of the insight one gains in attempting to unify one’s mind, body, and spirit; while endeavoring to understand and eliminate conflict inside oneself as well as outside.

Resources Online

Two excellent resources online are aikidojournal.com and www.aikiweb.com. Whether you are just considering starting, or an advanced student of the art, these websites can help you gain a better understanding of the art’s many facets.

I've practiced martial arts at various schools since 1987 and have been training at Best Martial Arts Institute since 2005. Best Martial Arts offers students the finest instruction available. In addition to outstanding teachers and beautiful training spaces, the dojo's community is solid. Friendly people learning martial arts in a non-competitive environment makes for a wonderful experience. I highly recommend Best Martial Arts Institute if you're interested in karate, tae kwon do, judo, aikido, or Systema. You won't be disappointed!

Aikido, I have found, is a never-ending pursuit that only becomes more intriguing as time moves forward. It is a way of self-defense, a way of maintaining physical fitness and flexibility, an activity that promotes friendship, a spiritual path, and most of all, simply a lot of fun. I would encourage anyone, regardless of age or physical ability to give it a try -- and I can think of no better group of people to pursue this art with than the members of Aikido of Eugene. My family and I moved to Eugene, Oregon in 2008. As a displaced Midwesterner, I felt somewhat out of touch with West Coast culture, however, I found an immediate sense of community and friendship with the people at this school. The instructors are highly skilled and are open and engaging. I have never known them to have anything other than the best interests of the individual student as their primary concern. The classes are open to all levels of ability and designed to promote personal growth and a sense of fellowship.I hope you can stop in and see what we're about. There's always a spot open for you on the mat.

Okay, disclaimer: I am a student at Aikido of Eugene. On the one hand, for some readers, that might make me a biased; but on the other hand, I'm a student at this dojo for a reason! Lots of reasons, actually. We have a dedicated group of students who are serious about this practice, while at the same time completely up to the task of enjoying our time on the mat, keeping it both light and fun while working hard. In addition to our senior instructor, Chuck Hauk sensei (6th dan), we have other instructors teaching throughout the week; each of them brings a slightly different flavor and emphasis to their classes. And that is how it should be... deep attention to technique, remembering the importance of blending and flow, the power of Aikido, as well as its philosophy of love and reconciliation; they're all here, and the training is a pleasure.Combine that with the etiquette and environment of respect and hard work that is part of the Best Martial Arts Institute, and the multiple seminars and events offering opportunities to study under other senior practitioners who come from Oregon and California (and occasionally even further afield) to teach, and train... all that for me adds up to a great place to call my aiki-home.If you're interested in training in Aikido, or even just checking it out, I'd encourage you to come by and watch (or join in) a class. I think you'll find something very special here.

I believe that I have known Chuck Hauk Sensei, the chief instructor of Best Martial Arts Institute, for about 15 years. His aikido is extraordinary. His teaching skills are among the very best I have seen. I always learn and have tremendous fun whenever I train with him.Hauk Sensei is terrific with people. He is very respectful, patient and quite funny. Aikido of Eugene is the place for great aikido in the Eugene area.

After completing our free trial week, we were so impressed with Alan Best and his ability to be fun for young kids while still maintaining discipline and providing clear instruction. Our son says he is going to do this for the rest of his life. He feels so proud to attend, and we will be signing him up for unlimited weekly classes. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Great dojo for kids and adults. My 7 y.o. studies karate and judo under sensei Alan Best. Sensei best has a great balance of patience and high expectations with the kids. I've seen my young one grow in discipline and technical competence under Sensei Best's instruction. My oldest son and I attend the teen/adult Judo class and it's awesome. It's a heck of a workout. The instructors are highly proficient and good at teaching what they know. From teenage girls to old guys like me everyone is treated with respect and a growth mindset.Very kind and supportive culture which is important when you are choking and throwing your classmates.

From our first visit, my 4 year old son was enthralled by the karate teachers at Best Martial Arts. They are fun and playful but still expect the kids to follow the rules. Fun, exercise, and discipline- I couldn't ask for a better combination for my child. And, there are also other types of martial arts that he can explore as he grows older!

I enrolled my son at Best Martial Arts when he was experiencing tremendous bullying in middle school. The Taekwondo/Karate class helped his self esteem and confidence so much. The instructors are great with kids and teens. Sensei Kufner played a huge role in helping my son grow into a confident young man.I would go watch class and decided "why am I just sitting here". So I enrolled with my son. That was about 10 years ago. My son is no longer at the dojo, but I have stuck with it. Being at the dojo is so much more than getting a workout. I have gained a dojo family and I feel that I am trying to live the principles Shihan Best teaches and embodies. It's made me a better person. After watching the Aikido class for quite a while, I decided to try it. And I love it.If you want a sense of community and to be with some amazing people, then Best Martial Arts is the place for you!Hope you come out and give it a try. It's so much fun.Debbie

Studied at Best for 18 years and loved every minute of it. Shihan Best is amazing with both adults and kids. Even better, the dojo is not just a place to learn martial arts, self-discipline and get in shape, it is also a fantastic community of amazing people. Having moved out of the area I can tell you Eugene is extremely blessed to have such a quality dojo with such an amazing man at the helm.

My youngest son just started a month ago, but he's already benefited so much from the karate classes. Sensei Best is such a fantastic instructor and he is so good with the kids (and adults, too). He keeps them very engaged and they're always having so much fun while learning a ton. He's a great motivator and I'm so glad that we started going here. The other instructors are really fantastic, too. Everything about this school is great. Don't hesitate to join or to enroll your loved ones.

I trained at Best Martial Arts Institute for about 8 1/2 years before moving from the Eugene area. Of all the things I miss by moving away Sensei Best, the other instructors and the students are what I miss the most. Sensei Best has the belief that members of the Dojo are a family and when you go there you really start to become part of the Dojo family. Sensei Best is indeed a highly qualified martial artist who has developed an Institute for the study of martial arts not just a martial arts school. This is not a school where you go a couple of years and walk away with a black belt. This is a family friendly school dedicated to the study of martial arts. I highly recommend BMAI to anyone seriously interested in martial arts training and especially to familes.

Alan Best has had a tremendous amount of experience. He works not only as an instructor, but as a mentor. I have watched the affect he has on personal growth with his students, and it is an intangible skill which stars cannot account for.

I have known Alan Best Sensei, the chief instructor of Best Martial Arts Institute, for quite a few years. He is a remarkably talented martial artist and instructor. He is intelligent, patient and has a wonderful sense of humor. He genuine likes people and teaching. Indeed, his teaching reflects that he loves what he is doing and his students' skills reflect this fact. His programs provide all -- children, men and women -- with an environment where they will be safe, learn discipline, self-defense, self-control and have fun. Lots and lots of fun with a great workout. I give Best Martial Arts Institute the highest recommendation possible. If you want quality martial arts training in Eugene, go to Best Martial Arts Institute.

BMAI was honored to host a memorial aikido seminar today for Kit Michaels, Sensei. His teachers, friends, and students came together from throughout the Northwest and Hawaii for a day of training in his honor. It was a day full of joyful practice with lots of smiles and laughter - just how Kit would have wanted it!

Kit Sensei was a talented and dedicated aikido master who taught aikido at the Eugene Family YMCA for 30 years. He was loved and respected by many of us at BMAI. His presence in this world had a huge impact on countless lives. His absence leaves a huge hole to our community.
